  • just before supper, spare a thought...

    Most of the cells in your body are not your own, nor are they even human. They are bacterial. From the invisible strands of fungi waiting to sprout between our toes, to the kilogram of bacterial matter in our guts, we are best viewed as walking "superorganisms," highly complex conglomerations of human, fungal, bacterial and viral cells.

    That's the view of scientists at Imperial College London who published a paper in Nature Biotechnology describing how these microbes interact with the body. Understanding the workings of the superorganism, they say, is crucial to the development of personalized medicine and health care in the future because individuals can have very different responses to drugs, depending on their microbial fauna.

  • diwali in Norwich

    In my home city of Norwich, this performance was brilliant, so I shared the Eastern Evening News' report with you all;

    ~~~
    The autumnal gloom was lit up this weekend with a stunning dance performance to celebrate Diwali – the Hindu festival of light.
    Hundreds of people packed The Forum in Norwich to admire the skills of an Indian dance troupe as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library's Black History Month.
    Library manager Julie Cleminson said today: "This is the third year the event has taken place. It is growing in reputation and seems to have dedicated followers who come to see this vibrant and exciting attraction each year.''
    Norwich troupe Natyapriya, which means lovers of dance in Sanskrit, performed traditional Indian dances to celebrate the festival on Saturday afternoon.
    The 12 dancers, in full traditional Indian costume and make-up, also re-enacted ancient folk stories about Hindu gods using a colourful array of masks, music, movement and costume.
    "There must have been more than 200 spectators this year. It brings the house down and it's great to see the library so alive," said Mrs Cleminson
    Diwali celebrates the Hindu New Year and the festival of lights and is one of the largest celebrations in the Indian sub-continent.
  • want to be loved ??
    How many of us want to be loved...or wish to be loved more?
    I'm convinced that a sizeable majority do, and most would seek that feeling of being loved...it is just how we each define 'love' that is the difference.
    Love in all it's various guises, emotions, feelings, strengths and weaknesses, is out there, without doubt, if one can give it, another can receive it, and so one.
    The Sunday Times had an article which I may have passed-on on another day, but it did catch my eye, as interesting, and a little enlightening. Not all in the article was exactly revolutionary, but, it offered more than a muse...please read;
    1) Believe in You
    If you do, others will. Don't wait for someone else to proclaim your talent or worth.
    Perceptions of others are often formed by the cues you send out.
    2) Reveal your inner eccentricity
    Individuality is key to becoming a star, be it local or global.
    [Gwen Stefani, Charlie Chaplin, Bjork)
    3) Have a groovy glide
    Stand up straight, shoulders back, hips, knees and arms loose, eyes ahead. It is those who move with ease and appear comfortable within their skins we find most attractive.
    4) Charm everyone
    To charm is to seduce. It is the result of actions that put others at ease, create a feeling of intimacy and bring warmth into an otherwise ordinary situation. Flattery, eye contact, light flirtation and making someone else feel good about themselves are the keys.
    5) Radiate charisma
    The word charisma derives from the ancient Greek charis, meaning gift. The idea is that the gods have breathed a special spirit into you. Nice, huh? It's all about believing that you have innate magnetism and powerful leadership qualities.
    6) Tap into your star quality
    Any casting director will tell you that this is all about f***ability. Crass, perhaps, but undeniable. Sex appeal is rooted in the ever-alluring promise of "maybe". Star quality is therefore defined by the degree to which you allow yourself to be seen. Be mysterious.
    7) Keep changing
    You may have your trademark glasses, your signature style, or your highly complicated goatee, but the last thing you want is to be frozen in time. Be a chameleon and others will come to you.
    8) Be ready for your moment
    When opportunities to shine arise, kick into a higher gear. There is a time and a place for your inner child, and then there are those moments when you have to step up to the plate.
    9) Keep something back
    As hard as it is to get to the top, it's even harder to stay there. So don't give it all away too soon. Keep a few tricks up your sleeve.
    10) Enjoy yourself
    As the late, great baseball hero Leroy "Satchel" Paige once said: "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, dance like there's nobody watching."
