So, Sepp Blatter, (or, Sepp Blotter, a Freudian slip by Graham Taylor), wishes to have two referees for future matches.
This has been mentioned as long as I've been interested in football and life, and well remember watching Spain82 with similar discussion. Fifa are oh-so-progressive!
But, as with all things human, no two people will ever be alike, so may I put this scenario before you;
We, ('we' being any national team you care to belong to, or follow), find ourselves in the semi-final of the World Cup, held in Iceland by a Fifa edict that dictates all World Cup's must be held in a nation of a different letter and flag colour.
Referee1 holds the game, and his half of the bargain very well, booking only one player, for a crude tackle on the armpit of a great player, who continues arm bandaged a-la-Beckenbauer.
Referee2 is way off the pace, called in as a replacement because 'official referee2' was involved in "unofficial payments" involving a game between Greenland and the Shetland Islands, (as Fifa now wish all regions to join in the fun).
Referee2 sends off two players, one from each team, for fighting, a correct decision, but both players were warming-up and not on the field of play, such was this referees' boredom at being on the quieter side of the halfway line...does he have the right to 'interfere with play' in this manner?
Will players alter their style if one side has a viscious card-wielding maniac of a referee, while the other is tolerant?
Will the two referees differ if a tackle is commited ON the halfway line?
If we have two referees, should we then have four linesman?
Which referee blows for kick-off?
Will the referee on the half that 'hosts' a penalty shoot-out get more money than the other ref?
My ultimate scenario is this...the game I refer to, is level at 1-1 after 119 minutes of play, heading for penalties.
Then a long through ball is played from the half of referee1 and the supersub of our team chips the goalkeeper, the ball clipping the underside of the crossbar, and falling over the line on the stroke of full-time. This whole move lasts barely two seconds.
In that time, as the ball was played from referee1's half, he blew his whistle, but referee2 did not call time, and in the heated atmosphere did not hear nor see it, and allowed play to continue in his half, thus allowing the goal.
What would happen?
Who calls time, referee1 or 2 when a long ball is played?
Speaking of referees, I think yesterday's penalty for France was very soft indeed. 90% of referees would probably not have given it. Did anyone notice how lethargic Thierry Henry looks? Is he the same Arsenal player? And he is acting in every game...something I do not see him do for Arsenal, where he is a perfect professional. Strange.
Well done Germany, Portugal, Italy and France, all are winners.

On a personal note, I have followed the physio's orders and damaged my knee ligaments in so doing. His own supervisor went wild with him for pushing me way beyond my powers.
Sigh.
