Asia has always had a strong cultural connection to the elephant. In Chinese, the phrase "to ride an elephant" sounds the same as the word for happiness. When Thailand was called Siam, the sacred White Elephant dominated the flag and culture. According to Thai legend, in the beginning all elephants were white and flew through the air, like the clouds and rain. Thousands of years later, a white elephant entered the side of Queen Sirimahamaya as she lay sleeping. Later she gave birth to Prince Siddhartha, the future Gautama Buddha. Among the predominantly Buddhist kingdoms of Southeast Asia, the most auspicious event possible during a monarch's reign was the finding of a white elephant.

Yes, absolutely, resplendent in beautiful fabrics and colours too...what a sight!
But the pure white elephant, I've never seen, though some Thais swear it is around.
If you find one, it is a great moment!
But could it be pure myth?-

P.T. Barnum once sent an agent to buy a white elephant, sight unseen, hoping to use it as a circus attraction. When it arrived in Bridgeport, Connecticut, it was covered with large pinkish splotches and was not white at all. The public was not impressed and Barnum had to keep his "white elephant" hidden from public view in a stable while he tried to decide how to recover some of the high cost. The elephant later died when this stable burned down.

It's very tragic for a beautiful creature considered 'sacred' isn't it...very sad.
Like some beautiful birds of paradise on markets in southern Asia are actually beautifully painted!!-

Louise tells me they do the same with crystals, irradiate them so that some are actually radio-active to change their colours and ake them glow (lol). In the tropical fish trade, some fish are bow injected with dye - sick. Mind you I would inject a few Icelandic whalers with something.

I enjoy posting them, and it's even better that you all like reading them too.
If there was a favourite animal of mine, the elegant regal elephant would be my fav.
I have never seen a white elephant, do they realy live?
